As a university researcher and professor, Art lead his field, working to alleviate the suffering of those impacted by spinal cord injuries or disabilities.
He served as the Executive Director of the International Society for Restorative Neurology and concluded his career with a decade in Washington, D.C., where he helped execute research to aid those who sustained life-altering disabilities.
His work has caused him to understand the importance of expanding affordable health care to every person.
As a church deacon, he helped focus his congregation on disability and social justice issues. He has served 10 years as a seminary trustee and has provided outstanding leadership in local congregations.
He retired at the end of 2011. He and his wife, Gwen have been property owners in Caldwell County for 50 years. Gwen recently retired from her position as Associate Dean of Nursing at UNC- Chapel Hill. They are proud grandparents of four girls and three boys.
